Surely all of us must have heard of this old adage which is “pen is mightier than the sword”. It is even mightier if the pen is used to draw images rather than write words. Welcome to the incredible world of comics and printed cartoons in Japan or in short – Manga. This is an extremely powerful medium built by the mangakas or people who draw them to express their thoughts. One can find that people of all ages love to read manga as they are available in a lot of different genres including action, comedy, mystery, scientific fiction, romance and many more. Often printed in black and white, one can also find colorful mangas.
Characteristics of a manga comic:
Eshinbun Nipponchi was the first ever manga magazine which was created in the year 1874 by two talented Japanese called Kawanabe Kyosai and Kanagaki Robun. Since then there have been no looking back. Post the Russia Japanese war, the publishing industry attained new heights of success with mangas. Mangas can be characterized by the following:
Predominantly black and white in appearance. Colorful mangas are also available.
Limited use of speech balloons or words. The earlier versions were silent in nature.
Quality of the art work done to express the story is of the finest quality.
Reason for immense popularity:
The primary reason for manga being so popular with the masses is because of the fact that these comics are illustrated and hardly contain any words. Therefore, children love them as pictures are easier to comprehend than reading words and are perfect for small kids too. In fact, there are many people who pride themselves being called an otaku or “people who love reading mangas to the point of being obsessed with it”. Today, this love for such comics has reached to such heights that the revenues have crossed the mark of ¥406 billion in Japan alone. Even the countries like Canada and United States of America have a substantial amount of people who love to read manga.
Today, there is no need to buy mangas as one can surely get to read manga from a lot of online resources. All one needs is a computer or a laptop or even a hand held device with internet facility. These are mostly free sites where readers can become a member and get access to the content. Some of the sites offer access to the content even without any membership.

Elf Fantasy Fair Arcen 2012 saturday 15th of september 2012
Every year in April since 2001, the substantial number of 25,000 people from all over Europe come to the largest Fantasy event on the European continent: the Elf Fantasy Fair.
Two-third of the visitors have transformed into orcs, magicians, dragons, knights, vampires, elves, unicorns, gothic lolita, manga comic hero or a combination of these. Every year the costumes are getting more resourceful and more artistic. In the midst of the budding nature of the Castle park which belongs to the largest castle of the Netherlands – Kasteel de Haar fantasy lovers indulge themselves in all that is offered and coveted: medieval music, dancing, lectures, theatre plays, and parades.
